A
Contaminated Moral Environment
(Vaclav
Havel)
We live in a contaminated moral
environment. We fell morally it because
we are used to saying something different from what we think. We learned not to believe anything, ignore each other, and selfish. Concepts
such as love, friendship,
compassion, humility Hatai, and willingness to
forgive has lost its meaning
and dimensions. For
some concepts that sounds weird, like a letter
to wrong address from the past, a little ridiculous
in the era of computers and the spacecraft is. Few
of us are able to shout loudly that the powers
that be should be limited, and
that the special farms
that produce organic food and high quality, the
results should give priority to
schools, children's homes, and hospitals,
if we are not able
to farm provide for all. Former regime
armed with an ideology that arrogant and intolerant,
already humbled human
being only as a force of production, and consider
nature as a mere instrument of production. This is where their nature
and interrelationship between nature and humans destroyed.
Human dignity that is full of talent and Otononom
been debased. Originally
they were working full-creations in their own country, but then became just
a bunch of nuts and made from a giant machine that
is noisy and smelly,
the machine is no longer true meaning is clear to everyone. The machine works more
slowly and will surely wear out,
as well as nuts and bolts.
When I talk about the contaminated moral atmosphere, I am not just talking about the great people who eat organic vegetables and never out of the airplane window. I'm talking about all of us. We are used to the totalitarian system and accepted it as a fact that can not be changed so that we preserve it. In other words, in different levels, we are all responsible for the operation of the totalitarian machinery. We are all not the only victims: we also become supporters.
Why do I say this? It makes no sense to look at the sad heritage of the past 40 years as something alien, which is inherited by our distant relatives. Instead, we have to accept this legacy as a sin we do to ourselves. If we can think of it like that, we will understand that it is up to us, and only us, to take action. We can not blame the previous leaders of all kinds, not only because it is wrong, but also would blunt the duty that we face today, namely the obligation to act independently, freely, reasonable, and fast. Make no mistake: the best government in the world, the best parliament and the president of the most powerful though, could not do much alone. It is wrong to expect only from their healing. Freedom and democracy include participation and therefore responsibility on us all.
'We are all responsible for the operation of the totalitarian machinery'
If we realize this, all the horror that the new Czechoslovak democracy inherited will not seem so daunting. If we know it, in hopes of returning to infiltrate into our hearts.
.... In conclusion, I want to be president of a little talk and a lot of work. Being president is not only going to look out of the window of an airplane, but most importantly, will always be present in the midst of people and listened to their voices well.
You may ask what kind of republic I dream of. Let me reply: I dream of a republic independent, free, and democratic; republic economically prosperous, and socially equitable. In short, a humane republic that serves all people, as well as the expectation that each individual store will also support it. I crave a republic consisting of people who are knowledgeable, because without them it is impossible all kinds of humanitarian issues, economic, ecological, social, or political can be resolved ....
My esteemed predecessor often opened his first speech with a quote from a prominent educator Republic, Comenius. Let me complete my first speech with a paraphrase of the same statement:
People all, government has returned to you!
